Earl of Sheffield’s Eleven 1884. ‘Cricket Match between the Australian Eleven and the Earl of Sheffield’s Eleven in Sheffield Park on May 12th & 13th [1884]’. Rare original shield-shaped folding admission ticket ‘to the Private Marquee’. The front with ornate colour design with ‘Advance Australia’ emblem to centre, crossed bats, stumps and ball motifs to top corners, and Lord Sheffield crown emblem below, floral decoration in gold. The ticket appears to be un-issued and is unsigned. The card with neat tape reinforcement to the fold. Very good condition. A scarce original ticket/ invitation.
The Australians, including Bannerman, Murdoch, Giffen, Bonnor, Blackham, Midwinter, Spofforth etc. won the match by an innings and six runs. Lord Sheffield’s XI included W.G. Grace, Ulyett, Shrewsbury, Greenfield, Hide, Shaw etc. Giffen and Palmer took ten wickets each in the match for the Australians.
