Francis Eden Lacey. Hampshire & Cambridge University 1880-1897. Single page handwritten letter in ink on official M.C.C., Lord’s letterhead from Lacey to David Denton (Yorkshire & England 1894-1920). Dated ‘21 VI [19]04’, Lacey writes ‘The Committee of the M.C.C. have selected you to play for the Players v the Gentlemen at Lord’s on July 4th, 5th, 6th’ and awaits confirmation of his availability. Nicely signed ‘F.E. Lacey, Sec. M.C.C.’ The page appears slightly trimmed and is laid down to a tightly trimmed album page with an original sepia candid-style photograph of Denton at Lord’s laid down to verso. Some soiling to the letter, otherwise in good condition.
Francis Lacey was Secretary of the M.C.C. from 1898 to 1926. He was the first person to be knighted for services to any sport. Denton played in the Lord’s match, scoring 4 and 0. Gentlemen won by two wickets.
