Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Albert Craig. ‘Cricket Rhymester’ 1896. Original single page broadsheet of a poem by Craig titled ‘The Prince At It Again. Makes his Eighth Century of the present season by securing 165 runs against Lancashire in the 2nd innings and 40 runs in the 1st. The Prince holds the honoured [sic] position as the best average batsman for 1896’. Craig writes that ‘The noble young Indian... fairly electrifies all’. Sussex ended bottom of the County Championship in 1896 but, in the final stanza Craig’s optimism states ‘You, Sir, may be far, far away/ When our men hold first place in the game/ But your history shall never decay/ Our children shall honor your name’. Below is an advertisement for Casson & Co. whisky and to verso for F.H. Ayres cricket equipment. The page measures 8”x12.75”. Tear to top edge, folds with some splitting, minor foxing, otherwise in good condition.
Ranji ended the 1896 season as the leading run scorer in the County Championship with 1698 runs, average 58.55. Sussex had to wait until 2003 to win the title for the first time.
