Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji. Cambridge University, Sussex, London County & England 1893-1920. Original printed ‘Order of Going In’ card for the match Sussex v Surrey at Hove, 31st August- 2nd September 1896. The card with players’ names handwritten in ink in Ranji’s own hand who was captaining Sussex for the first time in the absence of W.L. Murdoch. Players listed are Fry, Marlow, Ranji, Newham, Killick, Arlington, Collins, Bean, Parris, Hartley and Tate. The card has been laid to a decorative autograph page with annotations in ink by A.J. Gaston including ‘K.S. Ranjitsinhji 1st Order of Going In as Captain of the Sussex XI’ and ‘George Bean put in 8th wkt “out of form”’ with Gaston’s initials ‘A.G.’. The page has been further signed to both sides, mainly early 1920s, by a number of cricketers including F.B.R. Browne, A.L. Newbery, H.P. Chaplin (on piece laid down), A.K. Wilson (all Sussex), R.P. Keigwin (Essex & Gloucestershire), S.H. Day (Kent) etc., also E.R.T. Holmes (Surrey) signed to the top of the going in card. Originally from the collections of A.J. Gaston and Irving Rosenwater. The page with wear and some loss to edges, foxing to the card and page, otherwise in generally good condition.
In the final match of the 1896 County Championship season Surrey beat Sussex by ten wickets.
