‘The Australians, 1886’. Early large original sepia photograph of the Australian team who played Lord Sheffield’s Eleven at Sheffield Park, East Sussex on the 13th- 15th May 1886, standing and seated in rows wearing blazers, caps and cricket attire. The Australian Manager, umpires and scorers are also featured. The photograph laid down to official photographers mount with printed title and players names to lower border. Players include Scott (Captain), Bonnor, Giffen, Spofforth, Trumble, Blackham, Garrett, Jones, Bruce, Jarvis, Palmer etc. The photograph measures 11.25”x 9.25” and overall with mount 13.5”x11.5”, the mount slightly trimmed. Photograph by E. Hawkins & Compy, Late Hennah & Kent of Brighton. Small tape repair to lower left corner. An excellent early team photograph of the fifth Australian tour of England in very good condition.
The Australians’ opening match of the 1886 tour was a low scoring rain-affected game. Lord Sheffield’s XI won the match by eight wickets. For Lord Sheffield’s XI, Scotten made 30, W.G. Grace 18, Ulyett 24 and Barnes took 7-26 and Grace 4-50. For Australia, Scott made 23, Bonnor 16 & 23 and Garrett took 6-22 in Lord Sheffield’s XI first innings.
