Australia tour to England 1902. ‘Essex v. Australians, 1902’. Large original sepia photograph of the two teams seated and standing in rows wearing cricket attire and assorted caps and blazers, in front of the pavilion with crowds in the background looking on. The tour match was played at Leyton 15th- 17th May 1902. The Australians are Darling (Captain), Hill, Duff, Howell, Jones, Hopkins, Trumper,, Noble, Kelly, Gregory and Armstrong. For Essex, Owen (Captain), Kortwright, McGahey, Sewell, Russell, Perrin, Young, Carpenter, Mead, Fane and Reeves. Also the umpires Carlin and West, and Major Wardill, the Australian manager. The photograph, by Hanes of Brixton, measures 11.5”x9.5”, laid to photographer’s mount with printed title and players’ names on labels laid down to top and lower borders, partially over the photograph. Overall 13.75”x11”. Originally from the collection of H.I. ‘Sailor’ Young of Essex. Some age toning and minor blemish to one corner, otherwise a nice image in good condition.
Essex (178 & 13/2) drew with the Australians (249). Clem Hill top scored in the match with 104 in the Australians’ only innings. Victor Trumper took 5/33 in Essex’s first innings.
